Hello, this is Mini PC Lab. Today, a customer from Jeongwang-dong, Siheung-si contacted us regarding a "Supply System Problem" (Depleted Ink System) error on an HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer. This "Supply System Problem" is a representative error message that occurs in a Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS) when ink is not properly supplied to the printhead or when air gets trapped inside the ink cartridges.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is an all-in-one multifunction printer supporting printing, copying, scanning, faxing, wired/wireless networking, and automatic duplex printing. Thanks to its fast printing speed and high operational stability, it has been widely loved for a long time as a CISS-equipped printer.

The continuous ink unit currently used by the customer is a constant-pressure supply unit. The advantage of a constant-pressure supplier is that it can reliably supply ink using only atmospheric pressure and the height difference of the external tank, without needing extra devices like dampers. Due to its simple structure and low failure rate, many users prefer this system.

When a supply system problem occurs, you must first inspect where the ink supply is blocked. Upon carefully examining the printer, I discovered that the ink supply tube was bent and severed in some sections. As the ink tube became damaged, air was drawn into the line, ultimately preventing ink from reaching the printhead and triggering this error.

Step-by-Step Guide to Resolving the HP 8710 Supply System Error

Step 1: Inspect the Ink Tube for Damage and Kinks

• Appearance and Path Check: Open the front cover of the printer and follow the path of the ink tube to check for any bends, pinch points, or cracks.
• Check Carriage Clearance: Gently move the printhead carriage left and right by hand to ensure the ink tube maintains an appropriate length without catching on the internal walls or twisting.
• Tube Replacement: If the tube is damaged and air is leaking in, cut out the damaged section and reconnect it using an extension connector, or replace the entire ink tube assembly with a new one.

Step 2: Prime the Ink into the Head and Cartridge Using a Suction Syringe

• Remove Cartridges: Carefully remove the CISS cartridges from the printer.
• Attach Suction Syringe: Securely attach a syringe fitted with a suction tip to the ink outlet (rubber membrane area) at the bottom of the cartridge.
• Purge Air and Draw Ink: Slowly pull the syringe plunger to completely purge the air trapped inside the cartridge and tube, pulling until about 3–5 ml of pure ink comes out.
• Refill Head Chamber: Once the cartridge is completely filled with ink, wipe the outlet clean with a paper towel and reinstall it into the printhead.

Step 3: Reset the HP 8710 and Clear the Error Message (OOBE / Semi-Full Reset)

Even after filling the ink, the error log may remain stored in the printer memory, so a system reset is required.

• Enter Engineering Menu: On the printer home screen, press the 'Back (curved arrow)' icon 4 consecutive times. (Touch that location 4 times even if the icon is not lit up.)
• Enter Support Menu: When the Support Menu appears on the screen, tap to enter.
• Navigate to Reset Menu: Use the directional arrows to scroll to Resets Menu and press OK.
• Select OOBE Reset or Semi-Full Reset:
  • For simple error clearing: Select OOBE Reset.
  • For a full system reset: Select Semi-Full Reset.
• Reboot and Recalibrate: Selecting the reset option will turn off the printer. Turn the power back on and wait for the initialization process; the supply system error will be fully cleared, and the printer will return to normal operation

Practical Maintenance Tips for Long-Lasting CISS Printers

Most CISS printer breakdowns occur because the ink supply is not smooth. Keeping the following key points in mind will help you use your printer for a long time without minor glitches.

1. Correct Placement of the Constant-Pressure Tank (Most Important)

The external CISS tank must be placed on the exact same level surface as the printer. Raising the supply unit higher than the printer causes excess ink to flood into the printhead due to water pressure, spilling inside the machine. Conversely, setting it too low creates insufficient pressure, stopping the ink flow and causing the "Supply System Problem" error.

2. Keep the Air Vent (Cap) Open

The external tank of a constant-pressure supplier has a small plug and a large plug. During normal operation, the small air plug must always remain open to balance internal pressure and allow ink to flow smoothly. (Only close it when moving the printer.)

3. Proper Use of the Ink Tube Clamp (Locking Device)

When moving the printer to another location or removing cartridges for maintenance, always lock the clamp attached to the ink tube. Failing to do so can cause ink backflow or overflow.

4. Regular Printhead Cleaning and Printing

If a CISS printer is left unused for long periods, nozzle clogging or air bubbles in the tubes can occur. It is best to print a color test page at least once every 3 to 4 days.
